Footballer's mother dies in Hajj stampede

The mother of Senegalese footballer Mame Biram Diouf is understood to have died in the recent Hajj stampede  in Saudi Arabia, the player Premier League club Stoke City has said.

''Stoke City wish to extend sincere condolences to Mame Biram Diouf following the tragic death of his mother,'' a club statement read.

''The club will provide Mame with all the support he needs at this extremely difficult time and our thoughts and prayers are with him, his family and friends.

Shout of distress: Diouf lost his mother in the stampede

The stampeded that happened near Mecca last month has put the death toll at 769, according to official sources.
