Cameroon edge Gambia to pull clear in Group M

Cameroon registered their second consecutive victory in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after edging the Gambia one nil on Sunday in Banjul.

A second half strike from Vincent Aboubakar sealed the win for Volker Finke's charges who now top Group M with six points from their two games.

Volker Finke made made two changes to the side that beat Mauritius last month in Yaounde with Joel Matip slotting in defence for the injured Chedjou as well as Salli Edgar upfront for Clinton Njie.

It is Salli who came close to breaking the deadlock after 25 minutes when he misguided his header from a Henri Bedimo- cross.

Aboubakar was once more the match winner

The hosts however ended the half on the front foot with several half chances that never troubled Cameroon's steady backline.

The Indomitable Lions however adopted a cautious appraoch in the second half looking to hit the scorpions on the break with Choupo Moting coming close after a series of exchanges with Salli Edgar.

The Indomitable Lions finally broke the deadlock after 65 mins when Benjamin Moukandjo took advantage of his pace to put Vincent Aboubakar through on goal as the FC Porto man used his strenght to shrug off the Gambian defence before slotting home his second goal in as many games.

Choupo Moting almost made it two for Cameroon five minutes later but the Gambian defence recovered from their blunder to clear off the danger.

The Indomitable Lions understandably contained their opponents after the goal and kept their cool despite six minutes added on to pick all three points.

They now top Group M with six points ahead of Mauritius (3pts) after their 3-1 win over South Africa who tail the group with one point as well as The Gambia.
